横浜名所案内（3）横浜赤レンガ倉庫
1911年に明治政府によって日本最初の埠頭・横浜港として横浜赤レンガ倉庫が建設されました。日本初のエレベーターや避雷針、消化栓などが設置され、当時としては最新鋭の倉庫でした。1913年に完成した１号館には当時のエレベーターがそのまま保存されています。そこから数年で横浜港は大変な賑わいをみせます。しかし1923年の関東大震災により、１号館は半壊してしまいました。そこから復興し再び賑わいをみせます。戦後直後にはアメリカの司令部が置かれました。それから1956年までの約１０年間は横浜港はアメリカによって閉鎖されます。また横浜港に近い伊勢崎町一体が立ち入り禁止になっていました。この接収が解除されてから横浜港は再び盛んに貿易が行なわれました。しかし1976年にコンテナの発展により取引量が激減し、1989年にその役目を終えました。その後も横浜のシンボルとして保存が進められ、2002年に現在の横浜赤レンガパークがオープンし観光名所として利用されています。
